Bitcoin Hits $81K After Midterms, But Analysts See a Price Trap

Extreme Volatility on Election Night

The digital asset rebounded from an intraday low of $75,618. It climbed nearly 4% in a single day. This pushed the market cap close to $1.62 trillion. The spike occurred amid U. S. midterm election results. Democrats took control of Congress. This outcome raised concerns about future crypto regulation.

Market data shows the rally triggered massive liquidations. Coinglass data reveals over $951 million in positions were liquidated. Of that, $560 million consisted of short positions being closed. Bitfinex experts note investors are watching inflation data. ETF flows for 2026 have turned slightly negative. This signals a potential price trap.

Bitcoin experienced extreme volatility on Wednesday. It recovered from a multi-week low to break $81,000. This happened despite midterm results leaving Congress with fewer pro-crypto legislators. Bitstamp data shows the price dropped from $78,000 to $75,618 just before midnight. The coin then reversed sharply. Early results suggested Democrats might control both chambers of Congress.

Political Shift Leaves Regulatory Future Uncertain

The initial climb was gradual. It took nearly eight hours to gain $3,000, reaching $78,600. After consolidating above $78,200, Bitcoin jumped another $3,000 in under an hour. It peaked at $81,105. By 12:35 p.m. EST, the price was around $80,335. This represented a 4% daily gain.

The U. S. midterm results were a shock for the crypto lobby. Despite unprecedented super PAC spending, the industry failed to save pro-crypto Republicans. Democrats now control both chambers of the Capitol. Political observers warn the White House pro-industry agenda faces legislative headwinds.

However, industry leaders like Michael Saylor remain cautious. He points to Florida and Texas elections. A pro-Bitcoin reserve governor won in Florida. Democrat James Talarico, a supporter of state Bitcoin reserves, won in Texas. These results offer some optimism.

Bitfinex Warns Rebound Is Leverage-Driven, Not Spot

As markets stabilize, observers say investors have priced in a Democratic victory. Attention shifts back to macro factors like inflation and Fed policy. Bitfinex analysts warn new spot buyers have not supported the post-election rebound. Recent rallies were driven mainly by short covering. Continued outflows from U. S. spot Bitcoin ETFs have pushed 2026 net flows slightly negative. This removes a key source of structural demand.

Bitfinex's latest Alpha report states support below $77,000 is largely leverage-driven. Aggregate futures open interest rose to 701,548 BTC on Nov. 3. This is the highest level since late September. Annualized funding rates remain near 11%. Analysts warn support under the current price band is thin. Only about 353,000 BTC were bought between $75,000 and $77,000. A daily liquidation below $75,839 could expose a liquidity pocket between $70,000 and $75,000.

With elections behind, macro traders refocus on inflation data and Fed policy. Options positioning around the upcoming CPI release shows twice as many puts as calls. This signals institutional demand for downside protection. The market is testing whether authentic spot demand will return. Bitcoin traded volatily on Tuesday. It dipped to $76,268 before recovering above $77,700 as investors weighed Binance effects.
