Democrats to Investigate Trump Family Crypto Empire After Taking House

House Oversight Committee Targets Trump Family Crypto

Rep. Robert Garcia, who will lead the House Oversight Committee, responded to an Associated Press inquiry with a two-word message at 3:18 a.m.: „Let’s get the lawyers.” His office confirmed preparations to examine the „Trump criminal family,” alongside corporate corruption, immigration enforcement abuses, and the Epstein files. Garcia told Punchbowl News the committee will scrutinize family crypto transactions, Donald Trump Jr.’s businesses, and how relatives like Jared Kushner hold board seats and win contracts.

The key difference from the last two years is the power to issue mandatory subpoenas. While Democrats previously sent letters and requested Treasury investigations, those actions lacked legal force. Now, with majorities in both chambers, they can compel document production and testimony from the administration and private companies without presidential consent.

Mandatory Subpoenas Change the Dynamic

Reuters reported in September that investigations could begin as early as February, targeting corporate donors for the White House ballroom and firms dealing with Trump relatives. World Liberty Financial, the decentralized finance initiative and stablecoin launched by the Trump family in September 2024, is expected to be the first target. Focus is on the $500 million investment by Sheik Tahnoon bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the UAE national security advisor, whose investment vehicles acquired a 49% stake just before the January 2025 inauguration.

World Liberty Financial Under the Microscope

This stake is crucial because World Liberty seeks a federal bank charter for its USD1 stablecoin. The US Comptroller General granted conditional approval on August 14, with final signature pending. According to The Wall Street Journal, Tahnoon’s group and a Trump-affiliated entity jointly control approximately 87% of the bank-holding company.

Binance Pardon and Cyberattack Context

In February, House Democrats asked Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent to investigate this transaction and requested reports on suspicious activities tied to family projects. Earlier this year, Senate Democrats, through the Permanent Investigative Subcommittee led by Richard Blumenthal, opened their own inquiry into the TRUMP token and World Liberty.

Another major target is the pardon granted to Zhao in October 2025. The Binance exchange, which contributed to USD1’s launch, suffered a cyberattack last week with a $6.34 billion loss. Zhao maintained he has no business ties to the Trump family and did not discuss the pardon with them.

Financial Disclosures Reveal Massive Crypto Gains

Trump’s 2025 financial disclosures listed over $1 billion in crypto-related income, including roughly $635 million in royalties from the TRUMP memecoin. Reuters estimated the family’s total crypto earnings at at least $2.3 billion.

The investigations will not directly produce new laws. President Trump announced he would become „Mr. Veto,” and Democrats lack the two-thirds majority needed to override it in both chambers. Before the vote, the White House dismissed these plans; spokesperson Lauren Bis called them a „witch hunt that has lasted a decade.”

Political Impact Over Legal Outcomes

The administration is expected to invoke executive privilege and delay responses to document requests, as happened during Trump’s first term. Instead, Democrats plan to subpoena private entities tied to the Trump family. The impact on the crypto sector is more political than legal. TD Cowen analyst Jaret Seiberg wrote on Wednesday that the investigations „could make it impossible to advance a version of the Clarity Act that the crypto sector could support.” Bloomberg Intelligence identified crypto, defense, and technology as the sectors most exposed to these inquiries.
