Partnership Builds on Earlier Collaboration
Citigroup is integrating Coinbase’s core technology to enable direct acceptance of stablecoins by its clients. This relationship is not new, with the two entities having cooperated since October 2025 when they announced a broad partnership focused on digital asset payments. At that time, the emphasis was on developing infrastructure allowing institutional users to move seamlessly between traditional currencies and digital assets, while also exploring fiat-to-stablecoin conversion options.

Specific technical aspects of the new system remain limited. Neither the Wall Street Journal report nor Citigroup representatives have specified which blockchain networks or types of stablecoins will be initially supported in the payment processing system. This lack of technical clarity leaves room for various implementation scenarios in the medium term.
Four Pillars Guide Digital Asset Expansion
Alongside this partnership, Citigroup has outlined four foundational pillars for its digital assets division targeting aggressive growth in this segment. These strategic directions include expanding Citi Token Services, enhancing interoperability between different financial systems, advancing custody and tokenization services, and providing specialized banking infrastructure for virtual asset service providers. The bank’s stated objective is to function as an efficient bridge between fiat currencies, stablecoins, and other forms of digital tokens.
Custody+ Platform and Digital Depositary Receipts
In August, the institution unveiled its advanced custody platform called Custody+, simultaneously confirming plans to launch custody for native digital assets before the end of 2026, with Bitcoin as the first asset targeted for this service. The new cryptocurrency custody service will coexist with the bank’s conventional custody offerings, providing clients with a full range of value storage solutions. In parallel, Citigroup has entered the tokenized securities market, launching in June its Digital Depositary Receipts representing shares in private companies. These innovative financial instruments utilize regulated blockchain infrastructure operated by SIX, with Citigroup fulfilling both the issuer and custodian roles for these tokens.
Milestone in Blockchain Transaction Processing
Most recently, the bank set a major precedent by becoming the first U. S. financial institution to process live native transactions on a blockchain ledger based on Swift technology. This achievement underscores Citigroup’s ambition to fully integrate distributed ledger technology into its standard banking operations, marking a crucial stage in the digital transformation of the global financial sector.
